Henry Percival Henty
Harry Henty was born in Kew, in 1860, the son of Henry and Maria (McKellar) Henty.
Harry was a descendant of Edward Henty who had arrived in Portland Bay, in 1834, from Tasmania, looking for land on which to settle. In doing so, he became the first permanent settler, and a pioneer of Port Phillip district.
Harry worked in his grandfather’s business James Henty & Co. in William Street.
Around 1918, he gave his address as “C/- Mt. Martha Hotel”, and it was then he obtained some fifty acres, between Bay Road and Dominion Road.
He was soon to increase this land to 100 acres.
Harry had an additional seven acres on the corner of Dominion Drive and Glenisla Road, and thirty-five acres north of Bay Road - a triangle that would be part of land developed as the Balcombe Army Camp during World War 11.
It was in 1920 that Harry Henty had the well known mansion "Glynt" built by English mason, Charlie Appleby.
He was not to enjoy it for long as Harry died in 1924. He is buried in the Mornington Cemetery. Even though his wife, Jennie Henty, died in South Yarra, in 1948, aged 82 years, and his son Edric, in 1966, they are both buried with Harry, together with an infant grandson, who lived only three days.
