Charles Edward Adams

Charles Adams was born in 1870, the son of James Smith and Evelyn (Robinson) Adams and in 1897 he married Abigail Hutchinson. They lived in Mornington and Charles worked with his father James Smith Adams in the Slaughter yards and butchering business. He was also a Councillor with the Shire Council.

"A disastrous fire occurred at the slaughter yard of Mr. Chas Adams last week, the killing shed and boiling down house being totally consumed together with a quantity of tallow. A fire was left burning under the copper and it is supposed that the fat boiling over caught fire and spread to the building. The premises were situated in Benton’s Road, Green Island and were very complete, having been built by the late J.S.Smith." - Mornington Standard 6th July, 1899.

Charles was a keen horseman, and was at various times a Steward, Clerk of Course, and served on the committee of the Mornington Racing Club and was Patron of many others.

He raced his own horses and entered his horses in the various agricultural shows and at times joined in the hunt on Mr Jas Grice’s property.

"The trotting match on Monday last between Mr C.E.Adams ‘Baden Powell’ and Fred Francis’ grey mare was won by nearly a minute. The course was from Mr Jas Grice’s ‘Moondah’ gate to the Tanti Bridge, a distance of 2¾ miles.
Mr McLellan acted as starter. The grey went off with the lead and although Baden Powell looked dangerous at times, the mare won easily in the finish, the time being 13 minutes. The horses were ridden by their owners and there was a good crowd present to see the race."
Mornington Standard 19th September, 1903.

Charles Adams apart from a short time as a coach driver, worked his own butcher’s business in Mornington and died in 1950 aged 80 years.
