Benjamin Benton
Benjamin Benton was the first son of Benjamin John Benton and Eleanor Gwalter.
He was born in England in 1839 and his mother died the following year, at about the same time as his brother James was born.
Benjamin and his family emigrated to Australia, and settled in the Mornington area in 1852.
Benton Junior College, in Racecourse Rd, is one of many places named in recognition of the pioneering contribution made by the early Benton family.
Benjamin Benton died at the age of 82 years, in 1921 and was buried in Mornington Cemetery. His headstone proudly announces that he was “A Colonist of 62 Years”.
