William Frederick & William Preston Cobb


William Frederick Cobb was only 18 years of age when he died on the 7th September 1864 at Schnapper Point (Mornington).

The second son of William Preston and Rebecca (Corry) Cobb, Frederick is buried in the Mornington Cemetery.

His father William Preston Cobb, of "Preston Grange", Mornington, was born in Yorkshire in 1815, and arrived in the colonies in 1839 aboard the “William Metcalfe”.

He originally settled in the Mt. Macedon area, but was living at "Preston Grange" when he married his second wife Emma Jeffreys, daughter of the Archdeacon of Bombay. "Preston Grange" was where James Grice later built his mansion "Moondah".

Mornington Park Arch

Cobb Road, east of the 200 acre property is believed to be a legacy of William’s time in the area.

In 1860 William Preston Cobb Esq. was appointed magistrate for Schnapper Point.

In 1863 he was appointed, along with Alexander Balcome, Edward Lintott and James Butchart, to be on the committee of management for the site at Schnapper Point (Mornington) which was reserved as a park for public recreation.

William Cobb Snr eventually returned to England and died there in 1893.
