Amy Grant

Amy Grant, only and beloved daughter of Lewis Alexander and Amy Grant, died on 23 June, 1894. While not a lot is known of her life, what is known makes her interesting.

Her great grandfather was Colonel Alexander Grant, of Redcastle, Ross-shire, Scotland, and her grandfather was Lieutenant William Grant, of H.M. 16th and 92nd Regiments.

Of particular interest is where she died – at ‘Anniesleigh’.

The following events also occurred there:


‘Anniesleigh’, 280 Bungower Rd, Moorooduc

  • Theodotus John (T.J.) Sumner acquired Anniesleigh Estate during the 1854 land sale boom. He wanted to establish a Model Farm, but the land was not right and so he turned it over to grazing;
  • William Male’s son, George, (Thomas’ nephew) was born at Anniesleigh on 4 September, 1868;
  • James Pritt died at Anniesleigh in 1876, aged 37;
  • Richard Grindal was the overseer on Sumner’s Anniesleigh Estate in 1879;
  • James Mitchell married Hetty Grindal in 1904 and they settled at Anniesleigh;
  • In 1907 James Mitchell bought 750 acres of Anniesleigh;
  • In 1908 George Griffeths transformed part of Anniesleigh Estate, turning an area covered with timber and rubbish into an orchard. This property, ‘Baymount’, was the beginnings of Two Bays Nursery.
