Allen Nunn
Allen Nunn was born in 1819 in Essex, England, and he arrived in South Australia in 1840.
After some years, he moved to Tasmania, and then onto Circular Head, New South Wales.
Like most others in the early 1850’s he was seized with gold fever, and made for the Forest Creek diggings, but with not much success.
He arrived in Mornington in 1883, where he became the successful founder of the firm of ‘Allen Nunn and Son Storekeepers’.
Allen, and his son, Robert, first opened their store in Federal House, Main Street, and then moved up to Allchins corner.
They also established a store in Somerville.
Both men were highly involved in community affairs, with Robert Nunn serving many times as Shire Councillor. He was Shire President four times, in 1898, 1905, 1920 and 1926.
Allen Nunn passed away at his home in Somerville in 1902, aged 83 years, and Robert died at the age of 91 years in 1953.
Both men and family members are buried in the Mornington Cemetery.
Nunn’s Walk, Nunn’s Reserve, and Nunn’s Road were all named in memory of Robert Nunn’s contribution to the community.
