Mornington Butter Factory
The idea of a butter factory was discussed at a public meeting held in Mornington on May 3, 1894.
Businessmen Gib Barrett and Robert Nunn were very interested in the proposed factory and later became Directors of the Company which formed to finance it, with capital of £750.
The factory opened in 1897 and in the
first three months, it sold eight tons
of butter.
The Annual Butter Factory Picnic became
one of the great events of the year. Lack
of suppliers, due to a falling off in dairying
on the Peninsula, led to the closure of the
factory in 1908.
