Rev. James Caldwell
James Caldwell was born in Northern Ireland and arrived in Australia in 1860.
In 1874 he became Minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, which before that had been served by visiting clergy.
He remained as minister at St Andrew’s for the next 28 years, until his retirement in 1902.
He then continued his association with the church, as Superintendent of the Sunday School, until his death in 1907.
During this period he and his family lived in the imposing home "Glenbank" on the corner of Barkly St and Tanti Avenue.
In May 1892 the family suffered a terrible loss when three of their sons James, William and Hugh were drowned in the Mornington Football Disaster. A memorial plaque that was originally in St Andrew’s Church, has been relocated to St Mark’s Uniting Church in Barkly St.
James Caldwell remained active in the civic affairs of Mornington until shortly before his death in his 82nd year. He is buried in the Mornington cemetery.
