William Miller Irvine

William Irvine was a native of Scotland who arrived with his wife Margaret in New South Wales in 1853.

They moved onto Victoria where they tried their luck in the diggings at Daylesford and Castlemaine, and also spent a short time in New Zealand.
After returning to Victoria he took charge of Mr Bright’s grounds (Beleura) for 16 years.

William purchased land in the township.

He and his wife lived in Canterbury Street, where he became lessee of Irvine’s Royal Baths.

He was also Librarian of the local library which was housed in the Mechanics Institute Building, and he was also Secretary of the Mechanics Institute.

William and his wife Margaret worked tirelessly raising money for the building fund of the Mechanics Institute.
William was also a Councillor for the West Riding of the Mornington Shire Council, a Justice of the Peace and served on the bench of the Mornington Court.
