James Kerr

James Dawson Kerr was born in Glasgow in 1829, son of William and Elizabeth (Dawson) Kerr.

In March 1853 James and his wife Jane arrived in Australia aboard the "Sir William Molesworth".

James worked as a finisher in the Brass Foundry trade in Glasgow, and was to take up employment with Robison Bros, who owned the Victoria Copper Works in Flinders Street Melbourne.

Robison Bros were credited with having the first telephone service installed between their Flinders Street, and South Melbourne factories in the 1870’s.

James Kerr died in 1880, and is buried in the Mornington Cemetery. His son, John Kerr, was a grazier from Tarrawingee.
