Johannes Lindau

Johannes Fritz Otto (Hans) Lindau

Hans Lindau was born in Berlin in 1895. He had been residing in England for nine years when he was interned there in 1940 and sent to Australia aboard the Internment ship "Dunera".

Whilst in Hay and later Tatura Internment Camps he wrote the "Botany of Australia", a volume of Australian Flora written on 2,500 sheets of toilet paper all beautifully hand inscribed. This tome with its own handcrafted box was on display in 2010 as part of the National Library’s Treasures Exhibition.

About 1950 Hans came to Mornington to live and was a colleague of Foundation member of the Mornington Historical Society, Leslie Moorhead, at Mornington High School.

Whilst on the staff of the High School he was in charge of the Library, taught Geography classes and ran a Gardening Club for the pupils.

Hans planted the Eucalypts that are still growing along the frontage of the old school.

In his retirement he was heavily involved in the Community life of Mornington, being a member of the Historical Society and the Senior Citizens.
