William Alston


William was born in Edinburgh in 1846 and left for Australia when he was 20. On arriving in Australia he worked for his Uncle Gilbert Alston who was also a Blacksmith and living and working in Bulla, Victoria.

William met and married his first wife Jane in Bulla and the family were living in Schnapper Point in 1877.

After the death of his first wife Jane in 1890 he married Jane Coleman in 1892. William and Jane had one son William Archibald who died in 1954, and is also buried in the cemetery.

William served as a Shire Councillor on many occasions and was also elected Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge in 1905.

A Blacksmith by trade he operated the Mornington Shoeing Forge in Main Street Mornington and advertised himself as Blacksmith and Coach Builder.

In 1924 we find William and Jane living in Empire Street Mornington and William still working as a Blacksmith.

William died in 1930 aged 84 years and Jane, his second wife. died in 1949 aged 93.
